There are many symbols in the text “Superman and Paula Brown’s Snowsuit” by Sylvia Plath.
The title of the text itself includes two symbols: Superman and the snowsuit. As they are included in the title, they symbolize the theme of the text. As a “worshiper” of Superman, the author, was very powerful with superpowers that could always defeat the bad guys and protect the author: “He used to come roaring by in his shining blue suit with his cape whistling in the wind”. Therefore, Superman probably symbolizes imagination, protection, peace and childhood.
Paula Brown’s Snowsuit was the opposite of Superman. It caused the mini-war between the children, separating the author from his friends, making him hopeless and forcing him to accept the reality: “That was the year the war began, and the real world, and the difference.” It symbolizes reality, growing up and war.
With the two symbols in the title, the title suggests that war was starting in the country, and at the same time, the author changed from a child to a grown up, dreaming in her own imagination and slowly started to accept the reality.
