Tsunami is a series of waves in a water body caused by the displacement of a large volume of water, generally in an ocean or a large lake. It is a threat to human as it damages coastal areas environmentally and economically by causing great loss of lives and property damage.
Firstly, tsunamis negatively affect the economy of the cities and countries being hit. For example, the tsunami in Indonesia has damaged 558 houses and heavily damaged nine hotels, 60 restaurants and 350 boats. Rebuilding after a tsunami puts a significant financial strain on governments, which will affect other regions in the world as well.
Secondly, tsunamis kill a lot of lives. This is probably the worst part of tsunami. Just two weeks ago, a tsunami in Indonesia killed at least 222 lives without warning and eight hundred and more people were still missing. Tsunami affects survivors physically and psychologically. It also hurts family and friends of the victims.

Thirdly, tsunamis affect the environment by changing the landscape. It uproots trees and plants and destroys animal habitats such as nesting sites for birds. Land animals are killed by drowning and sea animals are killed by pollution if dangerous chemicals are washed away into the sea, thus poisoning the marine life. Some of these consequences were irreversible and affect the lives of the residents in the area for a long time.
Although it is nearly impossible to survive from a tsunami, people have tried to reduce the damage of tsunamis in lots of different ways. For example, avoid building or living in buildings near coastline, elevate coastal houses, make the houses stronger and take advices from an engineer. These ways have little effect on the death toll of tsunami and people are still trying.
As a conclusion, Tsunamis bring lots of negative consequences in the environment and the economy.
